چکیده

We propose a theory for ocular dominance (OD) patterns in mammalian primary visual cortex. This theory is based on the premise that OD pattern is an adaptation to minimize the length of intra-cortical wiring. Thus we can understand the existing OD patterns by solving a wire length minimization problem. We divide all the neurons into two classes: left-eye dominated and right-eye dominated. We find that segregation of neurons into monocular regions reduces wire length if the number of connections with the neurons of the same class differs from that with the other class. The shape of the regions depends on the relative fraction of neurons in the two classes. If the numbers are close we find that the optimal OD pattern consists of interdigitating stripes. If one class is less numerous than the other, the optimal OD pattern consists of patches of the first class neurons in the sea of the other class neurons. We predict the transition from stripes to patches when the fraction of neurons dominated by the ipsilateral eye is about 40%. This prediction agrees with the data in macaque and Cebus monkeys. This theory can be applied to other binary cortical systems.

A wire length minimization approach to ocular dominance patterns in mammalian visual cortex

The primary visual area (V1) of the mammalian brain is a thin sheet of neurons. Because each neuron is dominated by either right or left eye one can treat V1 as a binary mixture of neurons. The spatial arrangement of neurons dominated by di erent eyes is known as the ocular dominance (OD) pattern. We propose a theory for OD patterns based on the premise that they are evolutionary adaptations to...

Ocular dominance patterns and the wire length minimization: a numerical study

We study a mathematical model for ocular dominance patterns (ODPs) in primary visual cortex. This model is based on the premise that ODP is an adaptation to minimize the length of intracortical wiring. Thus we attempt to understand the existing ODPs by solving a wire length minimization problem. We divide all the neurons into two classes: leftand right-eye dominated. We find that segregation of...

Orientation Preference Patterns in Mammalian Visual Cortex A Wire Length Minimization Approach

In the visual cortex of many mammals, orientation preference changes smoothly along the cortical surface, with the exception of singularities such as pinwheels and fractures. The reason for the existence of these singularities has remained elusive, suggesting that they are developmental artifacts. We show that singularities reduce the length of intracortical neuronal connections for some connec...

Hebbian Learning of Recurrent Connections: A Geometrical Perspective

We show how a Hopfield network with modifiable recurrent connections undergoing slow Hebbian learning can extract the underlying geometry of an input space. First, we use a slow and fast analysis to derive an averaged system whose dynamics derives from an energy function and therefore always converges to equilibrium points. The equilibria reflect the correlation structure of the inputs, a globa...

Analysis of the postnatal growth of visual cortex.

Development and growth of V1 begins during embryogenesis and continues postnatally. The growth of V1 has direct implications on the organization of features such as the retinotopic map and the pattern of visual cortical columns. We have examined the postnatal growth and two-dimensional shape of V1 in macaque monkeys, cats, and rats. The perimeter, area, and anterior-posterior length of V1 were ...
